BRADENTON, Fla. (August 22, 2018) - Stone Crabs second baseman Vidal Brujan turned in a career performance Wednesday, leading Charlotte to an 8-3 win over the Bradenton Marauders Wednesday at LECOM Park.
Brujan set career highs in four different categories, enjoying his first multi-home run night while setting his own single-game marks for runs (4), RBI (5) and stolen bases (3).
The Stone Crabs (68-56, 34-23) scored right away Tuesday night. After Brujan walked and stole second, Jake Fraley lined an RBI double to the right field corner to make it 1-0 Charlotte.
After Bradenton (54-66, 19-36) tied the game on a passed ball, Carl Chester reached on an infield single to start the top of the third. Brujan followed with his first home run of the game, a two-run shot to right to give Charlotte a 3-1 lead.
The Marauders pulled to within 3-2 on an Adrian Valerio single to left in the bottom of the inning. However, Charlotte starter Brian Shaffer (2-1) pitched out of a second and third, one out jam to maintain the Stone Crabs' lead.
Shaffer delivered his second straight quality start Wednesday, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits over six innings to earn the win.
After Bradenton tied the game on a Hunter Owen home run in the fourth, Chester cranked his first High-A home run to left center to give Charlotte the lead back at 4-3. Later in the inning with runners at the corners and one out, Rene Pinto flew out to deep right to plate Brujan and make it 5-3.
Still up by that margin in the top of the ninth, Eleardo Cabrera was hit by a pitch before Chester singled to left. The next batter was Brujan, who ripped his second homer to right to cap the scoring at 8-3.
Charlotte right-hander Jhonleider Salinas spun three scoreless innings of relief to earn his first High-A save.
The Stone Crabs will go for the series win at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Josh Fleming (2-2, 4.17) makes the start for Charlotte against Gavin Wallace (3-2, 4.79) of Bradenton. Coverage starts at 6:15 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
