The Pacific Coast League announced Monday that RHP Bubba Derby has been named the PCL Pitcher of the Week for the period from August 14-20. Derby went 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA (2 ER/12.2 IP) in two starts during the week, helping the Sky Sox to a 9.0 game lead in the Pacific Coast League American North Division standings.
Derby pitched a PCL weekly-best 12.2 innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs with 10 strikeouts. On August 14 against the Baby Cakes, Derby fell an out shy of a quality start, giving up an earned run on just three hits and a walk in picking up the win. He recorded his second victory of the week five days later in a matchup against the second-place Dodgers. Derby tossed seven innings of one-run ball, striking out seven on four hits, to help the first-place Sky Sox lower their magic number, which is currently down to six; Colorado Springs is seeking its first postseason appearance in 22 seasons.
The 23-year-old started the year with Double-A Biloxi and made 18 appearances, 16 of which were out of the bullpen. He registered a 2.88 ERA across 50 innings before getting promoted. With the Sky Sox, Derby has made 10 starts, going 4-0 with a 3.38 ERA (53.1 IP, 20 ER), striking out 43 against only 13 walks. The California native has allowed two earned runs or less in eight of his first 10 career Triple-A starts.
Derby was originally selected by Oakland in the sixth round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of San Diego State University. He was traded to Milwaukee in a three-player deal in February 2016. Derby has a career 4.06 ERA (272.2 IP, 123 ER) in 68 appearances (47 starts) in three professional seasons. This is his first career Pitcher of the Week award for Derby and the first for a Sky Sox pitcher since
