COLUMBIA, S.C. – After cruising through the first four innings, the Fireflies bullpen struggled against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, allowing five runs to score in a 5-2 loss Sunday evening at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
Myrtle Beach (31-35) stole the lead in the home half of the sixth, when Pablo Aliendo raked a two-run homer off Matt Stil (L, 2-2) to put the Pelicans in front 3-2.
After Luis De Avila entered the game for the Fireflies (31-32) in the seventh, he allowed another pair of Pelicans to score in the seventh to give the two clubs the final score, 5-2.
The Fireflies countered out of the chute in the sixth, Herard Gonzalez deposited a single to left before Rubendy Jaquez punched a double over left fielder Jordan Nwogu’s head allowing Gonzalez to come and Columbia to retake the lead 2-1.
In his second game with the Fireflies, Austin Dennis hit his first homer, a no-doubter to left field that broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third frame.
Foster Griffin was masterful in his rehab start for Columbia. The southpaw spun his way through four innings, allowing one hit, but facing the minimum after forcing Ed Howard to ground into a double play for the first two outs of the fourth frame. He punched out three Pelicans batters while outdueling Richard Gallardo through the first four frames.
Stil came into the game in the fifth, and allowed a run to score to tie the game. After allowing a lead-off single to Pablo Aliendo, Stil fanned the next two batters before walking Nwogu and letting Kevin Made single up the middle to score Aliendo and tie the game.
After the off day tomorrow, the Fireflies return to Segra Park Tuesday to open up a seven-game set against the Augusta GreenJackets. The Fireflies will be celebrating Frontline Workers Appreciation Night, brought to you by T-Mobile, Princess Knight, presented by Lowes Foods and will have a t-shirt giveaway during the series.
