Toledo, OH --- Former Rays draftee Ryan Carpenter fanned 11 over six shutout innings as the Toledo Mud Hens beat the Durham Bulls 9-3 at Fifth Third Field on Sunday afternoon to win the three-game series.
Carpenter (W, 3-5), who was drafted and signed by Tampa Bay in 2011, beat his former manager Brady Williams by allowing just three hits and three walks en route to the victory. Carpenter pitched for Williams in 2012 in Bowling Green and in 2013 in Port Charlotte before being released. He is 1-4 over seven starts this season with Detroit.
Toledo (37-44) scored twice in the fourth against Bulls All-Star Arturo Reyes (L, 6-3). Willi Castro doubled home the first run of the game, then a sacrifice fly by Mikie Mahtook brought Victor Reyes home for a 2-0 lead. Centerfielder Jake Smolinski's throw on Mahtook's flyball went to third base, where Kean Wong put a tag on Castro. Williams came out to argue the call by Ryan Wills, then while walking back toward the first base Durham dugout, was ejected by plate umpire Skyler Shown.
Toledo scored three more times against Reyes in the fifth, highlighted by a solo home run by Daniel Pinero.
Vidal Nuno permitted four runs in the seventh as the Mud Hens assumed a 9-0 advantage.
Cole Sulser pitched two scoreless innings, fanning three for the Bulls (49-33).
Reyes, lost for the first time in four starts, allowed five earned runs on seven hits over five innings.
In the eighth, Nate Lowe clubbed an opposite-field, three-run shot against Jose Fernandez to break the shutout.
Toledo won the series two games to one.
Durham returns home Monday night to open a three-game series against the third-place Charlotte Knights at 7:05 PM ET. José De León (0-0, 3.28) is slated to oppose Donny Roach (2-3, 9.44).
