LANSING, Mich. – Jorge Burgos delivered an RBI groundout and a tie-breaking two-run homer, Rodney Boone tossed six quality innings, and the Lake County Captains (3-8, 34-42) defeated the Lansing Lugnuts (4-7, 35-41), 3-2, on Wednesday night at Jackson Field.

Jack Winkler swatted his second homer of the season in defeat for the Lugnuts, who threatened but were unable to overcome the efforts of Boone and a pair of relievers.

With the score tied 1-1 in the fourth inning, 2022 first-rounder Chase DeLauter doubled to right off Lansing starter Jake Garland. Two batters later, Burgos hit his team-leading seventh home run of the season to right field, giving the Captains a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Euribiel Ángeles and Brayan Buelvas provided back-to-back singles and executed a double steal to put the tying runs in scoring position, but Lansing could only manage a Max Muncy sacrifice fly against Boone, drawing within one run but stranding Buelvas at third on a Caeden Trenkle popout to first.

An inning later, Daniel Susac and Danny Bautista, Jr. delivered consecutive infield singles and were sacrificed into scoring position by Junior Pérez, but Boone set down Winkler on a popout and Ángeles on a groundout to escape.

After going down in order in the seventh and eighth against Magnus Ellerts, the Lugnuts mustered one last threat against Tyler Thornton thanks to an Ángeles two-out single. But Thornton struck out Buelvas on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.

Muncy (2-for-3, two doubles), Susac (2-for-4, single, triple) and Ángeles (2-for-4, two singles) each had multi-hit games in defeat.

Starter Garland allowed five hits and three runs in five innings, striking out three while walking none. John Beller followed with a scoreless sixth, Stevie Emanuels worked a scoreless seventh and eighth, and Brock Whittlesey handled a scoreless ninth.

The third game in the six-game series is a Coors Light Thirsty Thursday with $2 domestic drafts and $5 craft drafts. Gates open at 6 p.m. for a 7:05 p.m. start. Tickets are available via lansinglugnuts.com or by calling (517) 485-4500 during office hours.
