MEMPHIS, Tennessee – The Memphis Redbirds claimed a high scoring, extra-inning, 18-14 affair in game two of a six-game road trip with the Charlotte Knights at Truist Field on Wednesday night.
First baseman Juan Yepez and left fielder Alec Burleson each blasted a pair of three-run home runs. Yepez hit his second with two outs and two strikes in the ninth to tie the game at 12 and send it to extra innings. In the 11th, Burleson hit what proved to be the game winner over the opposite field wall to make the score 17-13.
Second baseman Nolan Gorman started the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the first inning. The No. 2 rated prospect in the Cardinals organization stayed red hot, going 5-for-6 in the ball game and scoring four runs.
In total, the teams combined for 32 runs on 31 hits, nine of which were home runs, and committed a combined six errors in a game that lasted over four hours.
Jake Walsh (1-0) pitched the ninth and tenth for the Redbirds and earned the win. Memphis (5-3) returns to Truist Field for the third game of the six-game road trip to take on the Charlotte Knights (5-3) on Thursday night at 6:04 CDT. Zack Thompson will start on the mound for the Redbirds for his second start of 2022.
