Campbell Leads the Way in Wild 14-7 Victory

DELMARVA – Noah Campbell broke a 5-5 tie in the seventh with his first career home run and went on to spark a four-run rally as the Mudcats ran away late with a 14-7 victory over the Shorebirds on Friday night at Arthur Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, MD. Carolina totaled 14 runs and 14 hits including two doubles, a triple, a home run and seven stolen bases in the road win.

Campbell went 3-for-6 with three runs, Ernesto Martinez tripled while going 2-for-5, Ashton McGee doubled twice and scored three runs, Joe Gray Jr. hit a two-run home run in the ninth and reliever Peyton Long left three inherited runners on in the sixth before going on to earn the win.

The Mudcats (10-6) and Shorebirds (11-5) traded runs for much of the night and entered the seventh tied at 5-5. Campbell’s homer broke that tie and sparked a four run seventh that would put Carolina up 9-5. The Shorebirds eventually came back with two runs in the eighth, but the Mudcats broke the game open in the ninth with five runs, including Gray’s two-run homer, while taking game four of the series 14-7.

In all, Campbell doubled and scored in the first, singled in the third, connected on his go-ahead homer in the seventh and reached on a fielder’s choice before scoring again in the ninth. He ended up going 3-for-6 with three runs, a double, a home run and a RBI while putting together a career night for the Mudcats.

Martinez originally brought in the game’s first two runs while driving in Campbell in the first with a triple to right-center. A throwing error on the back end of the triple allowed Martinez to score as Carolina took a 2-0 lead in the opening frame. Martinez also singled in the fourth and scored twice in the game.

Like Campbell, McGee also scored three runs while going 2-for-4 with two doubles. McGee had a run scoring double in the sixth and later doubled in the ninth before scoring his third run of the game.

Long (1-0, 5.40) entered in the sixth and managed to escape a bases load jam by getting a double play. Long also escaped a bases loaded jam in his last appearance earlier in the series. Cam Robinson worked the final two innings and earned his third save. Robinson (S, 3) also induced an inning ending double play while coming out of the Carolina bullpen.

Reliever Elliot Jenson took the loss for Delmarva after allowing four runs (one earned) while recording two outs in the seventh. Leonardo Rodriguez followed Jensen and went on to allow five runs over the final two and 1/3 innings.

The victory was Carolina’s second straight in the series and locked the two teams into a 2-2 tie. Jhoan Cruz (1-0, 3.95) will get the game five start for the Mudcats on Saturday night in Delmarva.
