COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. – Roberto Campos knocked a three-run homer and an RBI single, and the West Michigan Whitecaps (8-10, 40-43) beat the Lansing Lugnuts (7-11, 38-45), 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at LMCU Ballpark.
The Whitecaps, who managed only three hits total in the game, won two of three games in the series.
In the bottom of the first inning, Lansing starter Jacob Watters walked West Michigan leadoff hitter Carlos Mendoza, struck out Brady Allen, and walked Jace Jung. The 20-year-old Campos followed with his fifth home run of the year to right field, giving West Michigan all the offense they would need.
Watters allowed a third inning double to Jace Jung but no further damage, striking out four Whitecaps in three innings.
A relief trio of Charles Hall, Jack Owen and Pedro Santos took over from there, combining to allow strike out eight in 5 innings while allowing only one hit – a Campos RBI single in the eighth inning against Santos.
The debuting 6-foot-5 Santos fanned four batters in two innings, allowing one hit, one intentional walk and one unearned run due to a passed ball.
The Lugnuts, conversely, collected nine hits but went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and scored only a pair of second inning runs, provided by a T.J. Schofield-Sam RBI double and CJ Rodriguez RBI groundout.
After a Monday off day, the Lugnuts welcome in the Great Lakes Loons for a six-game homestand running July 18-23. Tickets are available via lansinglugnuts.com or by calling (517) 485-4500 during office hours.
