In another intense battle between the two first half champions, Vancouver emerged victorious after an eighth inning surge.
Tyler Badamo, a fourth year minor leaguer from New York, made his second start for the Hops in just three days. Badamo loaded the bases in the first but was able to escape the jam unscathed in part to a diving stop in the hole by Ryan Grotjohn, saving a run.
Hillsboro stayed hot. Camden Duzenack reached base once again and on a full count started to run while Pavin Smith blooped one into right scoring the speedy infielder.
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee product Daulton Varsho started off the bottom of the second inning with a double that one hopped the fence down the left field line. Varsho would cross the plate in the effective "get him over, get him in" offense to make it 2-0 Hillsboro.
The Canadians would get one back in the top of the third following a Kevin Vicuña double and a David Jacob RBI single. It was quiet until the Hops offense came back to life in the bottom of the fifth. Grotjohn singled to start the inning and scored on a throwing error by Deiferson Barreto, who made an outstanding diving play to rob Duzenack of extra bases but threw the ball over Clemens' head which allowed Grotjohn to score, making it 3-1.
Badamo's second start as a Hop was much better than the first, as he finished the day scattering seven hits and allowing a single run. He was replaced by Kevin Ginkel in the seventh who threw one plus innings of relief, scattering three hits and striking out two.
Matt Peacock entered the game in a jam in the top of the 8th inning, with men on second and third when shortstop Logan Warmoth, the Blue Jays' first round pick in 2017, doubled off Peacock down the right field line to knot the game at three apiece. Cullen Large would add to the damage by singling through the right side, scoring Warmoth from third base.
Centerfielder Reggie Pruitt was at it again in the 9th when he missed a home run by a foot and a half but wheeled his way around for a lead off triple. He would come in to score on a fielder's choice to make it 5-3 Vancouver.
William Ouellette, the Canadians closer, fired two scoreless innings to notch the save, tying Erbert Gonzalez for the league lead.
