Kannapolis Denies Delmarva's Late Rally

KANNAPOLIS, NC: The Delmarva Shorebirds (8-21) fell to the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (14-15) on Thursday night by a score of 7-4.

The Cannon Ballers took their first lead of the series in the opening frame as a deep fly-out to left by Caden Connor scored Rikuu Nishida from third, giving Kannapolis a 1-0 lead.

They manufactured another run in the second on Nishida's fielder's choice groundout, putting Delmarva behind 2-0.

The Shorebirds cut the deficit in half in the third as Stiven Acevedo brought home Noelberth Romero on a groundout to third, making it a 2-1 game.

Kannapolis got that run back and then some in the fourth on an RBI double by Ryan Galanie, followed by a two-run triple by Eddie Park, extending the Cannon Ballers' lead to 5-1.

Noelberth Romero powered Delmarva back in the game in the fifth as he launched a two-run homer over the wall in left field, pulling the Shorebirds within a pair at 5-3.

Delmarva's offense manufactured a major threat in the sixth as they loaded the bases with nobody out on three consecutive singles. With one out, they plated a run on a bases-loaded walk to Aneudis Mordan, but the Cannon Ballers escaped without any further damage to hold a 5-4 lead after six innings.

The Shorebirds put together another serious threat in the eighth as singles by Aron Estrada and Angel Tejada to open the inning helped Delmarva put runners at second and third with no outs after Tejada stole second. However, Bryce Collins did not allow either to score as he struck out the side, keeping Delmarva behind by one.

Kannapolis took advantage by adding two insurance runs in the eighth on RBI singles by Galanie and Connor to go ahead 7-4, and they'd go on to win by that score to take game three in the series.

Both starting pitchers factored into the decision as Aldren Batista (3-0) earned the win for Kannapolis with Michael Forret (2-2) taking the loss for Delmarva. Jesus Mendez (4) earned the save for the Cannon Ballers.

The Shorebirds will look to get back into the win column on Friday as Braxton Bragg takes the mound against Seth Keener for Kannapolis. First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m.
