Canzone Adds Two Hits In 10-3 Loss To Missions

Amarillo, Texas — Game three between the Sod Poodles and Missions took a late turn with the Missions scoring nine runs over the final three innings. A seven run seventh inning was too much of a hole for Amarillo to overcome as they fell 10-3 on Thursday night, snapping a three game winning streak over the Missions dating back to July 11th.

For the first time in this series the Sod Poodles found themselves in front first. After right-hander Matt Tabor got out of the first inning without a run allowed, the Soddies took a lead in the bottom of the first. D-backs' No. 15 rated prospect Dominic Fletcher hit an opposite field home run with two outs. Tabor retired the Missions in order in the top of the second inning allowing the Sod Poodles to get back to work at the plate.

Amarillo strung together three straight singles with one out as they added to their lead with another run in the second.

San Antonio cut the Soddies lead in half after a single came around to score on a RBI double with two outs in the top of the third inning. Amarillo went down in order after it looked like Fletcher might have been hit by a pitch. Instead of being awarded first base, he was put out the very next pitch after hitting a screamer back up the middle that was snagged by San Antonio starter Osvaldo Hernandez.

Each of the first two batters for the Missions reached on singles to begin the fourth. Tabor got a fly out before striking out the next two batters to keep the Missions at bay with the Amarillo lead intact. Amarillo once again failed to manage a baserunner, sending Tabor back to work in the top of the fifth. The D-backs' No. 21 rated prospect picked up the fifth strikeout of his outing for the first out of the inning. His sixth of the night sent Amarillo back to the plate trying to add to their lead. For the third consecutive inning, the Sod Poodles were retired in order as they could not muster any offense or insurance runs.

An error allowed the leadoff man to reach in the top of the sixth inning but he could not do any harm as the Sod Poodles got out of the inning with a double play. The Sod Poodles also had a runner reach on an error but he too was left stranded with the game remaining 2-1 in favor of the Sod Poodles.

Tabor came back on for the start of the seventh inning. He hit the leadoff man before the Missions took their first lead on a two-run home run. Another single and RBI double gave the Missions a two run lead and brought an end to Tabor's night. Right-hander Tyler Jones made his Double-A debut for Amarillo after being promoted from High-A Hillsboro on Tuesday. He was met with a two-RBI double, pushing the Missions lead to four runs. In all, the Missions exploded for seven runs on eight hits to take the 8-2 advantage in the seventh.

Amarillo got two runners aboard including their first hit since the second inning when Osvaldo Abreu singled to leadoff the bottom of the seventh. Alek Thomas also reached by way of a fielder's choice and error. Both runners advanced into scoring position after a wild pitch however neither would cross the plate after a ground out ended the inning.

The Missions tacked on another two runs in the eighth on a two-run home run with two outs, making it a 10-2 game.

13-year MLB veteran and current San Antonio relief pitcher Joe Beimel came on in the bottom of the eighth inning. Dominic Canzone picked up his second hit of the night with a two-out single.

Mikey Reynolds hit his fifth home run of the season with a solo shot with one out in the ninth but Amarillo would not get any closer as the Missions took game three 10-3 on Thursday night.

The Sod Poodles and Missions continue the series with game four tomorrow night from HODGETOWN. Right-hander Ryne Nelson (0-1, 4.01 ERA) gets the start against RHP Adrian Martinez (6-3, 2.38 ERA).

Tabor's Night:The D-backs' No. 21 rated prospect cruised through his first six innings on Thursday night. He had allowed five hits but just one earned run with six strikeouts and no walks issued. As he took the mound to start the seventh, a hit batter, home run, single, and RBI double blew up his stat sheet, souring what was a lights out start through six innings. Tabor entered the game with a 0.73 ERA in July that is now sitting at 2.05 after the five earned allowed tonight. Tabor leads Amarillo starters with four quality starts for the Soddies in his first 10 starts.

Different Dom, Same Bomb:After seeing Dominic Canzone hit his first Double-A home run in last night's win, Dominic Fletcher got in on the long ball action tonight. The D-backs' No. 15 rated prospect put the Soddies ahead in the bottom of the first inning with his ninth home run of the year. He took the fifth pitch of his first at bat and sent it to the opposite field, clearing the left field wall. So far in the series Fletcher is 4-for-11 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.

15 or More:After having an opponent have 15 or more hits just once through the first 68 games of the year, It has now happened twice in their last seven. Frisco put together a 15 hit performance here at HODGETOWN on July 22nd. Tonight, San Antonio put together 16 hits, with 11 coming between the 7th and 8th innings. Amarillo has two games with 15 or more hits this year. Both were 20 hit outbursts to set/tie the Amarillo franchise-high. Once on June 5th at Frisco and again on June 9th vs. Corpus Christi.

Thirsty Thursday's: The Sod Poodles dropped to 3-10 in Thursday night games on the year following tonight's 10-3 loss at the hands of the Missions. The Sod Poodles have all three wins on Thursdays on the road and are still waiting for their first win of the year at home on Thirsty Thursday.

In A Canzone: Dominic Canzone continues to swing a hot bat in Double-A. Through his first three games, he is hitting .500 (5-for-10) with a home run, three RBI, two walks and four runs scored in his first Double-A action of his career. The Ohio State product was hitting .269 (47-for-175) with 18 extra base hits, 26 RBI in 45 games with High-A Hillsboro at the time of his promotion to Amarillo.
