DAYTON, OH — The West Michigan Whitecaps scored six runs in a two-inning span and pulled closer to a spot in the 2024 Minor League Baseball Postseason as part of a 7-2 victory over the Dayton Dragons in front of 8,130 fans Friday at Day Air Ballpark.
Max Anderson sparked a four-run third inning and two-run fourth to help West Michigan with a pair of run-scoring doubles to put the Whitecaps ahead by five runs after four innings, helping them creep to 3.5 games behind a playoff spot of the first-place Dragons with eight games remaining in the 2024 regular season.
The Dragons stole the first run of the contest when catcher Cade Hunter scampered home on an attempted pickoff throw by Whitecaps backstop Bennett Lee, putting the ‘Caps behind by a score of 1-0. One inning later, back-to-back run-scoring doubles by Anderson, and Thayron Liranzo highlighted a four-run frame to give West Michigan a 4-1 lead. In the fourth, an RBI single by Seth Stephenson and a second run-scoring two-bagger by Anderson extended their advantage to 6-1. A sacrifice fly from Luke Gold in the seventh helped the two teams trade single runs in the seventh to close the scoring in the contest and send West Michigan to their third win in four games of a pivotal series in Dayton.
The Whitecaps improve to 32-25 in the second half overall mark to 63-60, while the Dragons fall to 36-22 in the back half of 2022 and 70-54 overall. West Michigan reliever Yosber Sanchez (4-2) worked two scoreless frames out of the bullpen in collecting his fourth win of the season, while Dayton starter Jose Franco (1-3) took his third loss after giving up four runs in 2.2 frames. Campos extended his team-best hitting streak to 15 games with a 2-for-5 performance, giving him a 15-game hitting streak for two consecutive seasons, as he also accomplished the feat in 2023.
