EASTLAKE, OH – After each series this season, the Lake County Captains will spotlight a Captain of the Week, presented by Official League, showcasing a player and their strong performance over the previous week.

For the week of June 18 through 23, Lake County is recognizing OF Jorge Burgos as its 10th Captain of the Week for the 2024 season.

The 22-year-old performed exceptionally well at the plate against the South Bend Cubs, as he was also named the Midwest League Player of the Week. He led qualified Midwest League players in: OPS (1.305), total bases (17), slugging percentage (.850), and extra-base hits (five). The outfielder was also tied for the league lead with eight hits, three doubles, and three multi-hit games.

Additionally, Burgos led Lake County with two home runs and five runs scored, while ranking second on the team with four RBI.

Defensively, he had two outfield assists from left field, which were tied for the most in the Midwest League during this span.

So far this year, Burgos has recorded 24 hits, six doubles, six home runs, 20 RBI, two stolen bases, and a .681 OPS in 34 games. His six home runs rank fourth on the team, and second among active Captains players.

Burgos was signed by the Cleveland Guardians as an international free agent on January 9, 2019 out of Barquisimeto, Venezuela. The left-handed hitter had a productive 2019 season in the Dominican Summer League, hitting .276 with 54 hits, 16 doubles, five triples, 14 RBI, 10 stolen bases, and a .780 OPS in 54 games. Then, in 2021, Burgos hit .325 with 63 hits, 16 doubles, three triples, one home run, 23 RBI, a .413 on-base percentage, and an .867 OPS in 54 combined games with the Arizona Complex League Guardians and Single-A Lynchburg Hillcats.

One year later, he had a strong full season with Lynchburg. In 105 games, he hit .278, leading the team in hits (110), total bases (152), and RBI (66), while also tallying 18 doubles, three triples, six home runs, and six stolen bases.

Burgos was then assigned to Lake County’s 2023 Opening Day roster, and made an immediate impact in his first trip to the plate as a Captain. In Lake County’s season-opener against the Dayton Dragons, he hit a grand slam on the first pitch of his High-A career, setting the tone for an eventual 8-3 Captains victory.

The outfielder also hit Lake County’s only walk-off home run of the 2023 season, which was his second home run of the game, in a 5-4 victory in 10 innings over the Quad Cities River Bandits. Burgos eventually finished the season with a .238 batting average, 77 hits, 15 doubles, one triple, seven home runs, and 46 RBI in 94 games.

Burgos will look to continue his recent success this week, as the Midwest League East First Half Division Champion Captains return home for a six-game series against the Great Lakes Loons. The series is set to begin on Tuesday night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at Classic Auto Group Park in Eastlake. All six games will be broadcast on the Bally Live app and MiLB.TV, with social media coverage courtesy of @LCCaptains on X and Instagram.
