EASTLAKE, OH – After each series this season, the Lake County Captains will spotlight a Captain of the Week, presented by Official League, showcasing a player and their strong performance over the previous week.
For the week of July 23 through 28, Lake County is recognizing RHP Zach Jacobs as its 14th Captain of the Week for the 2024 season.
The right-hander recorded a pair of scoreless relief appearances this past week against the Great Lakes Loons, tossing a combined 5.1 shutout innings. He allowed a combined five hits and one walk, while throwing seven total strikeouts.
Jacobs earned his first win in over a month on Friday, July 26, allowing four hits and one walk, while throwing in four strikeouts in 3.2 scoreless frames of work en route to the Captains’ eighth shutout of the year.
So far this season, Jacobs has made 24 appearances (five starts) for Lake County. He leads among Midwest League pitchers (minimum 60 innings pitched) in fewest hits allowed (37), fewest runs allowed (19), and fewest earned runs allowed (17). Among this group, he also ranks top-three in WHIP (0.92, second), ERA (2.55, third), and fewest walks allowed (18, third).
Jacobs was drafted in the 18th round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Cleveland Guardians out of UC Riverside. He made 19 starts over three seasons with the Highlanders, recording three wins, two complete games, one shutout, 86 strikeouts, and 22 walks. The right-hander’s best collegiate performance came in his third career start on February 29, 2020 at Saint Mary’s. Jacobs tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits and no walks, while throwing a career-high nine strikeouts in a 1-0 win.
Upon being drafted by the Guardians, he was assigned to the Arizona Complex Guardians on August 17, 2022. However, he did not appear in a professional game until he was assigned to the Single-A Lynchburg Hillcats on April 6, 2023.
Jacobs made 29 appearances (3 starts) for Lynchburg last year, leading the Cleveland player development system and tying the Carolina League lead with 10 wins. He ultimately went 10-4 with a 4.43 ERA, three saves, 94 strikeouts, and 29 walks in 91.1 innings of work.
Jacobs will look to continue his recent success this week, as the Midwest League East First Half Division Champion Captains host a six-game series against the Beloit Sky Carp. The series is set to begin on Tuesday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. from Classic Auto Group Park in Eastlake. All six games will be broadcast on the Bally Live app and MiLB.TV, with social media coverage courtesy of @LCCaptains on X and Instagram.
