EASTLAKE, OH – After each series this season, the Lake County Captains will spotlight a Captain of the Week, presented by Official League, showcasing a player and their strong performance over the previous week.

For the week of July 30 through August 4, Lake County is recognizing INF Tyresse Turner as its 15th Captain of the Week for the 2024 season.

The Lake County infielder had a remarkable week at the plate against the Beloit Sky Carp. His .643 batting average (9-for-14) during this span led MiLB and MLB (minimum seven at-bats), and his .688 on-base percentage (minimum 15 plate appearances) was tied for the lead across MiLB and MLB with Triple-A Columbus Clippers INF/RF Gabriel Arias. Additionally, Turner’s nine hits were tied for the fifth-most in the Midwest League.

In a scheduled seven-inning game on Wednesday, July 31, the 24-year-old gave the Captains their sixth walk-off win of the season with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning. After not recording a three-hit game in his first 64 High-A contests, the switch-hitter recorded back-to-back three-hit performances against Beloit on Saturday, August 3 and Sunday, August 4.

Turner is currently on a five-game hitting streak, during which he is hitting .556 (10-for-18) with three runs, one double, two RBI, two walks, one stolen base, a .600 on-base percentage, a .611 slugging percentage, and a 1.211 OPS. His .556 batting average during this streak (minimum 18 at-bats) ranks second across MiLB and MLB.

So far this season, Turner is hitting .251 with 42 hits, 29 runs, three doubles, three home runs, 20 RBI, 26 walks, and 17 stolen bases in 53 games. His 17 stolen bases without being caught stealing are tied for the third-most in MiLB this season.

Turner was drafted by the Cleveland Guardians in the 13th round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of USC. After initially being drafted by the Miami Marlins in the 38th round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of Gahr High School (CA), he played four collegiate seasons with the Trojans. At USC, Turner hit .296 with 109 hits, 81 runs, 20 doubles, five triples, nine home runs, 49 RBI, 40 stolen bases, and an .844 OPS in 108 games. He was named to the 2022 All-Pac-12 Team after leading the Trojans in: doubles (15), total bases (100), walks (25), stolen bases (15), slugging percentage (.524), and OPS (.943).

Upon being drafted by the Guardians, Turner was assigned to the Arizona Complex League Guardians on December 1, 2022. However, he did not play any games for them, and was later assigned to the Single-A Lynchburg Hillcats on April 6, 2023. He played 52 games with Lynchburg last year, hitting .233 with 41 hits, 36 runs, three doubles, one triple, two home runs, 21 RBI, 24 walks, and 26 stolen bases.

Turner was then called up to Lake County on August 15, 2023. In 13 games with the Captains, he hit .267 with eight hits, 10 runs, one double, two triples, one home run, two RBI, four walks, four stolen bases, and a .904 OPS. His 30 stolen bases across Lake County and Lynchburg last season ranked fourth in the Cleveland player development system.

Turner will look to sustain his recent success this week, as the Midwest League East First Half Division Champion Captains continue a six-game road series against the Dayton Dragons. After Tuesday night’s series-opener was suspended in the top of the fifth inning, the game will continue as part of a doubleheader on Wednesday night. First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for 6 p.m. from Day Air Ballpark in Dayton. The remainder of the series will be broadcast on the Bally Live app and MiLB.TV, with social media coverage courtesy of @LCCaptains on X and Instagram.
