JUPITER, FL – Behind another dominant start by Chen-Wei Lin (W, 10-5), the Palm Beach Cardinals (76-46, 39-17) defeated the Daytona Tortugas (61-60, 30-25) by a final score of 8-3 on Thursday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Lin became the first pitcher in the Florida State League to 10 wins in 2024 as he picked up his second win against Daytona.

After a scoreless top of the first inning, the Cardinals got to work offensively in the bottom of the frame. Bryce Madron led off with an infield single and advanced to second base on a groundout. With two outs, Jose Suarez hit an RBI single to right field to score Madron and give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.

Two innings later in the bottom of the third, the Cardinals sent nine batters to the plate and scored five runs. JJ Wetherholt got the scoring started with an RBI walk. Suarez followed that with his second RBI single and Ryan Campos hit a sacrifice fly. Joshua Baez capped the scoring in the inning with a broken bat, two-RBI single which gave Palm Beach a 6-0 lead.

Lin finished his 21st start of the season with five scoreless innings and tied a season-high nine strikeouts which he previously did back on July 25th against the St. Lucie Mets.

Nelfy Ynfante was the first Cardinal out of the bullpen in the top of the sixth inning. With runners at first and third base and no outs, Malvin Valdez hit a sacrifice fly to right field which put the Tortugas on the scoreboard.

However, Palm Beach got the run back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Jon Jon Gazdar to score Baez and put the Beach Birds ahead 7-1.

In the next inning off of new Palm Beach pitcher Henry Gomez, Daytona added two more runs thanks to an RBI groundout by Ricardo Cabrera and a wild pitch which allowed Ariel Almonte to score which cut the Cardinals’ lead to 7-3.

Palm Beach added one more run for insurance in the bottom of the eighth inning. With runners at second and third base and one out, Daytona relief pitcher Alex Johnson balked, and Campos came into score to make it an 8-3 Cardinals’ lead which held on for the final score to even the series at two games each.

Offensively, Suarez and Gazdar each had two hits for Palm Beach while Madron led the game with two runs scored. Daytona still leads the regular season series 13-11 over Palm Beach with three games in this series remaining.
