KINGSPORT, TN - The Johnson City Cardinals defeated the Kingsport Mets, 7-6 in 10 innings to even the series at one game apiece and earn their fourth win of the season.
Moises Castillo started the game off with a bang, when he hit his first homerun since August 2017. That homerun gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. The Mets took the lead when they scored two runs in the bottom of the first against Cardinals starter, Edwar Ramirez.
In the top of the second, with two outs, Kevin Woodall hit his first homerun of the season to tie the game at two. Edwar Ramirez shut out the Mets in the bottom of the second. The Mets and Cardinals were shut out in the third inning, and we moved to the top of the fourth tied at two.
In the top of the fourth, Leandro Cedeno led off with a single. Nolan Gorman then reached on a throwing error by Kingsport Mets pitcher, Nate Peden and that error allowed Cedeno to score to make the game 3-2 in favor of the Cardinals. After a flyout, Cardinal DH Brandon Riley in his first game with the Cardinals collected his first professional hit and RBI with an RBI double to score Gorman and increase the lead 4-2. The Mets came back with three runs of their own to make the score 5-4.
The Mets and Cardinals would shut each other out in the fifth inning, but in the sixth inning the Cardinals scored two runs. Leandro Cedeno and Nolan Gorman hit back-to-back singles. During Gorman's at-bat, a passed ball allowed Cedeno to move to second. Gorman singled and Cedeno moved to third, the throw from the right fielder went home and Gorman advanced to second on the throw. After a pitching change, Brian Sanchez hit an RBI single. With Gorman on third and Sanchez on first, Brandon Riley hit into a double play, but Gorman would score from third and the Cardinals took a 6-5 lead heading into the botton of the sixth.
Evan Sisk relieved Edwar Ramirez in the bottom of the sixth and pitched a scoreless sixth inning. The Cardinals were shut out in the top of the seventh, and the Mets tied the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In the top of the eighth, David Oca made his entrance into the game and he shut out the Mets in the eighth and ninth innings, while the Cardinals were also shut out in the top of the eighth and ninth innings. The Mets and Cardinals were tied at 6 and would need extra innings to settle the game.
With the new extra inning rules, the Cardinals started with Nolan Gorman on second. With one out, Brandon Riley grounded out and allowed Gorman to go to third. With two outs and a runner on second, and Kevin Woodall at the plate, a wild pitch allowed Gorman to score from third and give the Cardinals a 7-6 lead. David Oca got the first out in the 10th and then Tommy Parsons relieved him to get the final two outs to seal the Cardinals 7-6 win.
