CORPUS CHRISTI - After no-hitting the Hooks in Game 1 of Thursday's twin bill, the Cardinals completed the sweep by dispatching Corpus Christi, 4-2, in the nightcap before 3,226 fans at Whataburger Field.
By blanking the Hooks, 5-0, in the opener, Springfield turned in the first no-hitter in its 19 seasons, with Cooper Hjerpe and Andrew Marrero teaming to retire 21 of 22 hitters. Jordan Brewer was the lone man to reach for Corpus Christi, working a two-out walk in the third.
Springfield plated a pair in both the second and third against Michael Knorr. Kasey Ford worked three scoreless innings from the Hooks bullpen. Alejandro Torres was charged with an unearned run over the final two frames.
The Hooks, facing a 1-0 deficit to start Game 2, cracked four hits in the home first to take the lead. Tommy Sacco's single to center was followed by consecutive two-out knocks from Pascanel Ferreras, Colin Barber and Jeron Williams. Williams accounted for the extra-base hit by searing an RBI double into center. Barber plated Ferreras with a line-drive single into left.
Williams completed a 2-for-3 day by sending a triple over the head of centerfielder Bryan Torres in the fourth, but the Hooks could not push him across.
Cardinals pitching held CC to one hit and four walks over the final six innings.
