Carolina Comes Up Short in 6-5 Loss in Extras

ZEBULON – Arbert Cipion hit a go-ahead home run in the fourth, Jackson Chourio turned in his third multi-hit game, and Alberis Ferrer had a game-tying single in the seventh, but the Augusta GreenJackets outlasted the Carolina Mudcats in a 6-5 ten inning victory on Saturday night at Five County Stadium. Carolina’s series lead dropped to 3-2 with Saturday’s loss.

Augusta (14-12) led first in the game after getting a run against Carolina (14-12) starter Carlos Rodriguez in the opening frame. Rodriguez, however, escaped the first with the bags full and went on to work through the fourth with just one run allowed on two hits. Rodriguez then retired the side in order in the second, third and fourth innings before leaving the game.

With starter Kris Anglin cruising along, the GreenJackets would stay in front 1-0 through the third before the Mudcats took the lead on Cipion’s home run in the fourth. The home run was his second of the season and was a two-run shot off reliever JJ Niekro who replaced Anglin with one out in the third.

Carolina later added one more run against Niekro in the fifth on a RBI single from Eduardo Garcia. That run scoring hit was Garcia’s second of the game, but came in what would be his last at bat. Ferrer replaced him in the fifth and would remain in the game at shortstop.

The Mudcats led 3-1 before Augusta scored once in the sixth and three times in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead against reliever Miguel Segura. Segura originally came in for the fifth and ended up allowing four runs on five hits over three and 2/3 innings.

Carolina would then quickly answer Augusta’s two-run seventh with a two-run frame of their own while tying the game at 5-5. Both Carolina runs in the last of the seventh came in on a two-run single by Ferrer off reliever Rolddy Munoz. Both runs, however, were charged to Niekro as he was still in to start the seventh.

Munoz (BS, 1) eventually got through the rest of the seventh without allowing another run and went on to pitch into the ninth while holding Carolina scoreless. Rob Griswold took over in the ninth and worked a scoreless tenth while earning the win and sealing the Augusta victory. Grisold (2-1) escaped a bases loaded jam in the ninth and struck out one over an inning and 1/3.

Karlos Morales ended up with the loss after allowing the winning run in the tenth. Morales (1-1) first entered in the eighth for Segura and finished the frame with a strikeout. He then worked a scoreless ninth before allowing a go-ahead RBI single to Rusber Estrada in the tenth. Estrada went 3-for-5 with a double and a RBI for the GreenJackets.
