FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 17, 2022) - Casey Legumina tossed two scoreless relief innings for the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday, becoming the second Mighty Mussel to make his Major League debut over the last week.
He becomes the third Mighty Mussel to appear in an MLB game, joining 2021 Fort Myers teammates Louie Varland and Edouard Julien. Left-hander Brent Headrick was also promoted to the Twins on Sunday and will likely become the fourth former Mussel to debut at the Major-League level.
Legumina slammed the door for the Reds, pitching the final two innings ahead of their 13-0 victory over the Phillies. The right-hander allowed one hit and one walk while striking out three hitters.
After Reds right-hander Connor Overton was placed on the 15-day injured list, Legumina, already on the team’s 40-man roster, received the call to take his spot. He had pitched to a 1.59 ERA over 5.2 innings for Triple-A Louisville this season.
Legumina was drafted by the Twins in the eighth round of the 2019 first-year player draft and was traded to Cincinnati for infielder Kyle Farmer last November. Over 14 appearances with Fort Myers in 2021, Legumina registered a 3.02 ERA and .191 opponents’ batting average, while striking out 56 batters in 44.2 innings of work.
