San Jose, CA (Friday, June 17) – The Fresno Grizzlies (39-22) were defeated by the San Jose Giants (35-26) 3-1 Friday evening from Excite Ballpark. Fresno dropped their third straight game to San Jose, a road season-long. The Grizzlies must win just one more game against the Giants to earn a playoff berth for the second consecutive season.
In the top of the first, Fresno took a 1-0 lead after a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. San Jose tied the contest in the third after a Grizzlies error. The Giants grabbed the advantage in the sixth after a Yorlis Rodriguez sacrifice fly. Rodriguez concluded the scoring in the eighth after a towering blast to left. The two-run lead was enough for Giants closer Tyler Myrick to pick up his fifth save of the year.
Grizzlies’ starter Brayan Castillo was fantastic over five innings of work. He allowed one run (unearned) on two hits and four walks while fanning three. Castillo has not permitted an earned run over his last two starts, spanning 11 frames. Lefty Felix Ramires (1-1) suffered the decision after giving up one run in the sixth. Blake Goldsberry struck out a pair in his first outing back with Fresno. Bryce McGowan punched out two in the ninth despite being ticketed for the clout.
Giants’ southpaw Esmerlin Vinicio was wild in his spot start, walking three and beaning one batter. Julio Rodriguez, Evan Gates and Spencer Bivens combined for seven shutout innings of relief. Gates (4-1) led the charge with three sensational frames, earning the triumph. The clubs are back in action tomorrow night from the South Bay.
