ASHEVILLE- The Asheville Tourists and the Wilmington Blue Rocks took the field against each other on Tuesday night for the first time in either franchise’s history. One game into the head-to-head matchup, we seem to have a nice rivalry on our hands. Asheville’s Logan Cerny belted a two-out, two-run walk-off Home Run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Tourists a 7-6 victory.
Asheville trailed 6-2 with two outs and nobody on base in the bottom of the eighth. Miguel Palma and Tim Borden II both hit singles. Tommy Sacco Jr. worked a full count and then belted a three-run Home Run to bring the Tourists to within a run. In the ninth, Asheville put the leadoff man aboard but a double-play threatened to spoil the evening. Jacob Melton kept the game alive with a single and Cerny then connected with the game-winning blast.
Palma delivered an RBI single earlier in the game but Asheville’s offense struggled for the most part over the first seven innings. Valente Bellozo did an excellent job on the mound with 4.1 innings pitched and only one run allowed.
Wilmington used a trio of Home Runs in the middle innings to build their 6-2 lead but it was not enough. Carlos Calderon earned the win with a scoreless ninth inning pitched and Franny Cobos also had a scoreless appearance out of the bullpen; his first outing with Asheville since Opening Day.
The Tourists have won seven games in a row at home; all by two runs or less. Three of those wins have come on a walk-off Home Run.
