For the sixth game in a row, one team scored in the first inning of a Chiefs game and Wednesday it was the hosts. Brice Turang singled to center off Colin Schmid and David Fry doubled over the shift with one out. Turang scored on a fielders' choice as he slid past Alexis Wilson's tag and Fry came home on a sacrifice fly as Wisconsin took a 2-0 lead.
The Chiefs got on the board in the fourth against Aaron Ashby. Brady Whalen made it to second for a double as his pop up landed between three Rattlers in right-center. With two outs, Malcom Nunez picked up his fifth RBI of the season with a single to center before Ashby got out of the inning.
Wisconsin broke the game open with plenty of help from the Chiefs in the fifth. With one out, Wadye Ynfante dropped a fly ball in right-center for a two-base error and Kory Howell drew a walk. Turang hit a fly ball to right that Ynfante trapped while diving for the catch and one run scored for a 3-1 lead. With runners on the corners, Connor McVey bunted and two runs scored when Whalen threw wild to first base where nobody was covering. With the Chiefs out of position on the shift, Fry singled home the final run of the inning for a 6-1 Wisconsin lead. The Rattlers added a run on two hits and double play groundout in the seventh.
The Chiefs scored the final run of the game in the eighth when Brendan Donovan hit a solo homer to right, his third of the season. Peoria then grounded into their MWL-leading 35th double play.
Schmid (1-1) took the loss allowing seven runs, five earned, on a career-high nine hits. He walked one and struck out five while tossing 97 pitches and picking off one runner. Evan Sisk allowed an inherited runner to score on one hit over two innings as he struck out two.
The series concludes Thursday at 11:05 a.m. as Peoria starts RH Kyle Leahy (1-4, 4.97) against Wisconsin RH Reese Olson (1-2, 5.70).
