Davenport, IA - The Peoria Chiefs scored five runs in the fifth inning and held off a ninth inning rally to beat the Quad Cities River Bandits 7-4 in Iowa Wednesday night. The win jumps the Chiefs to seventh place at 17-27 on the season with one game left in the series.
The game was scoreless into the bottom of the second when the River Bandits strung together hits against Chiefs starter John Kilichowski. With two on and one out, Taylor Jones doubled high off the right-field wall to score Marcos Almonte for a 1-0 lead. Oswaldo Duarte doubled to the left-field wall to score Ronnie Dawson and Jones for a 3-0 lead before Kilichowski recorded two strikeouts to end the inning.
The Chiefs rallied back with help from ineffective Quad Cities pitching in the fifth inning. Dylan Carlson drew a one-out walk from Carlos Sanabria and moved to second on a single by Jose Martinez. Shane Billings walked to load the bases and Sanarbia walked Tommy Edman to force in a run. With the Chiefs down 3-1, Stefan Trosclair was hit by a pitch to bring home Martinez before Quad Cities changed pitchers. Reliever Forrest Whitley walked Brian O'Keefe to force home Billings to tie the game 3-3. Ryan McCarvel singled up the middle to score two and give the Chiefs their first lead of the series at 5-3. Whitley issued another walk to Vince Jackson but Yepez flew out to end the inning.
Quad Cities came back in the bottom of the frame to knock Kilichowski out of the game. Daz Cameron walked and stole second with one out before Yordan Alvarez walked. A RBI single by Almonte cut the Chiefs lead to 5-4 and Dewin Perez took over on the mound for Kilichowski. The Chiefs lefty struck out Dawson and got a groundout to end the inning.
The Chiefs got that run back against Whitley in the sixth. Carlson drew another walk and moved to second on a balk. Martinez collected his third hit of the night to put runners on the corners before Billings struck out. Edman singled to right to score Carlson and put the Chiefs on top 6-4 before Whitley escaped the inning.
Perez walked the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning and was yanked in favor of Yeison Medina. The new Chiefs relievers struck out Chuckie Robinson and Alvarez to escape the jam.
Peoria added on in the eighth against new Bandits reliever Ronel Blanco. Martinez picked up his fourth hit of the game with a leadoff infield single. Martinez stole second, moved to third on a bunt single by Billings and scored on a sacrifice fly from Edman for a 7-4 Peoria lead.
Quad Cities loaded the bases in the ninth against reliever Eric Carter. A walk and a single put two on before Carter struck out the next two. Jones walked to load the bases but Carter struck out Duarte to end the game.
Kilichowski took a no-decision as he allowed four runs on five hits over 4 1/3 innings while walking four and striking out four. Perez walked three and struck out two over one hitless and shutout inning. Medina (1-0) earned the win as he allowed one hit and hit a batter while striking out five over 2 2/3 shutout innings. Carter walked two and allowed a hit while striking out three as he earned his fourth save.
