After three scoreless innings from Chiefs starter Michael Baird, the Lugnuts broke through against reliever Tony Locey. After a single and groundout, LJ Talley hit an RBI single to put the Lugnuts ahead 1-0. Lansing pushed across three runs in the fifth for the 4-0 lead.
The Chiefs got on the board in the bottom of the seventh against Lansing starter Troy Watson. With two outs, Brendan Donovan doubled and scored as Brady Whalen singled to beat the defensive shift to cut the deficit to 4-1.
Peoria scored one run in the bottom of the eighth against Lugnuts reliever Justin Watts. Brandon Riley worked a one-out walk and scored from first on a throwing error as Edwin Figuera reached on a fielder's choice to make the score 4-2.
The Lugnuts padded their lead in the top of the ninth while knocking Peoria reliever Rodard Avelino out of the game. After loading the bases, the Lugnuts scored four runs on two walks, a single, and a hit by pitch to take an 8-2 lead. Eli Kraus came in relief and got Hagen Danner to groundout into an inning ending double play.
Baird took the no decision pitching three scoreless innings while allowing three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Tony Locey pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Sebastian Tabata pitched two thirds of an inning, allowing two runs on two hits with two walks and one strikeout. Parker Kelly walked one and struck out one in three shutout innings. Avelino pitched one third of an inning, allowing four runs on one hit with five walks and one strikeout. Kraus did not allow a base runner as he pitched two thirds of an inning to finish the ninth.
The Chiefs continue their six-game homestand against the Lansing Lugnuts Thursday at 6:35 p.m. Peoria will start RH Kyle Leahy (4-6, 2.94) against Lansing RH Sean Wymer (4-7, 6.35).
