Chiefs Take Series with 5-3 Win Sunday

Clinton, IA - The Peoria Chiefs won the last game of a three-game series against the Clinton LumberKings with a final score of 5-3 on Sunday to win their second straight series. The Chiefs are 24-32 overall with an off day on Monday, but will resume play on Tuesday against Kane County with a 7:00 p.m. first pitch at Dozer Park.
Clinton got on the board in the first inning against Chiefs starter John Kilichowski. Luis Rengifo hit a deep home run to left field to give the LumberKings a 1-0 lead. Bryson Brigman singled and moved to third when Yojhan Quevedo singled to put runners at the corners, but Kristian Brito grounded into a double play to end the inning.
The LumberKings extended their lead against Kilichowski in the second. With one out, Gareth Morgan and Johmbeyker Morales both drew walks and a wild pitch put runners at second and third. Luis Liberato hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field to score Morgan and Rengifo doubled to plate Morales to give Clinton a 3-0 advantage.
The Chiefs cut into Clinton's lead against starter Ronald Dominguez in the fourth inning. Andy Young singled to left field and moved to third when Andrew Knizner singled to right. Young scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Peoria took the lead in the fifth against Dominguez. Dylan Carlson led off the inning with a single to right field and Nick Plummer walked. Shane Billings bunted for a single to load the bases and Young singled to left field to score Carlson with Clinton still leading 3-2. Knizner singled to left field to score Plummer and Billings and give the Chiefs a 4-3 lead. The LumberKings brought Steven Moyers out of the bullpen and with one out Jackson grounded into a fielder's choice that brought home Young to give Peoria a 5-3 advantage.
Clinton loaded the bases in the eighth inning with two outs after Max Almonte issued walks to Morales and Liberato. Yeison Medina came on in relief for Peoria and walked Rengifo and Brigman hit a ball to shallow right field, but Ryan McCarvel made a sliding over-the-shoulder catch to end the inning and the threat. Medina threw a perfect ninth inning to lock down the win for the Chiefs.
Kilichowski lasted 4 1/3 innings in a no decision while allowing three runs on six hits with six walks and a strikeout. Ronnie Williams (2-3) went 2 2/3 innings in the win while holding Clinton scoreless with two hits and a walk. Almonte threw 2/3 of an inning while earning a hold and walking two. Medina earned a save while throwing 1 1/3 innings without allowing a run or a hit while walking one and striking out two.
Notes… Young tied a career high with three hits… Young has 16 multi-hit games this season, five of which are three-hit games, both lead the Chiefs… Billings had his eighth overall and second consecutive multi-hit game… Carlson collected his sixth multi-hit game of the season… Jackson and McCarvel had five-game hit streaks snapped… The Chiefs tied a season-high by turning three double plays which they also did on May 17 at Cedar Rapids… Kilichowski tied a career-high with six walks… Peoria pitchers walked 10 hitters which is a season high… Knizner had his 6th multi-RBI game of the season which ties him for the team lead with Young… Peoria is 7-6 in two-run games this season and 15-6 when scoring five runs or more… Peoria finishes the first half by playing 10 of their final 13 games at home… Six of the Chiefs final 13 games will be played against Kane County, who Peoria has not faced this season… The Chiefs have an off-day Monday and return home for a seven-game home stand starting with Kane County on Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. first pitch… The Chiefs send RH Bryan Dobzanski (1-4, 4.69) to the mound against Kane County RH Sam McWilliams (6-2, 2.60)… Tuesday will be a Chick-Fil-A Thank You For Your Service Tuesday where veterans and all first responders (police, fire, EMT) receive $3 tickets with a valid ID… The broadcast can be heard, starting with the Pre-Game Show at 6:45 p.m. on www.peoriachiefs.com/listenlive which also has downloads for a free app on the iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Android…The broadcast is also available on the Peoria Chiefs Network in the Tune-In Radio App.
