Chirinos Homers in 7-3 Loss to Delmarva

ZEBULON – Jesus Chirinos hit a game-tying home run in the third, Hedbert Perez had three hits and Jeferson Figueroa struck out six over four innings, but the Delmarva Shorebirds earned a series opening 7-3 victory versus the Carolina Mudcats on Tuesday night at Five County Stadium. The loss stretched Carolina’s current losing streak to six consecutive games.

The Mudcats (6-10, 40-42) originally trailed 1-0 after the second before Chirinos connected on his fourth homer of the season to tie the game at 1-1 in the third. Eduardo Garcia then put Carolina up 2-1 with a RBI single in the fourth, but Garcia would later be caught at home to end that same fourth after trying to score from first on a hard double from Perez.

The Shorebirds (6-10, 27-54) went on to answer Carolina’s run in the fourth with three runs in the fifth and would not look back the rest of the way. The two teams did end up scoring a run each in the sixth, but Delmarva would put the game away with a run in the seventh and ninth while taking the opener 7-3.

Elio Prado started Delmarva’s three-run fifth with a solo home run off starter Miguel Segura. Frederick Bencosme followed with a walk and would later score on a wild pitch to put the Shorebirds up 3-2. Trendon Craig then used his third hit of the night to bring in another Delmarva run to give the Shorebirds a 4-2 lead.

Segura (2-2) left after the fifth and would end up with the loss after giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks. Figueroa followed and worked through four innings with three runs and five hits. Those three runs came on a RBI double from Prado, a Stiven Acevedo triple in the seventh and a home run from Bencosme in the ninth.

The loss was Carolina’s sixth straight, matching their longest losing streak of the season. The series will continue Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. with game two of the six-game series.
