LYNCHBURG – Jackson Chourio extended his hitting streak to 11 games while going 3-for-4 with a RBI triple in the eighth and Hedbert Perez hit a solo home run in the ninth, but the Carolina Mudcats fell behind early and never caught up as the Lynchburg Hillcats picked up a series clinching 8-2 victory on Saturday night at Bank of James Stadium in Lynchburg, VA.

The Hillcats (28-21) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first after Jorge Burgos connected on a solo home run off Carolina (27-23) starter Fernando Olguin in the opening frame. Lynchburg then added on three more with a Victor Planchart two-run double and a run scoring double from Yordys Vadles in the second. The lead later climbed to 8-0 later in the game after Milan Tolentino and Junior Sanquintin both drove in runs with singles in the fifth.

Olguin (1-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits over four innings. He also walked one and struck out five. Jakob Brustoski took over in the fifth and allowed four runs, gave up two hits, walked four and struck out three in his only inning of work.

Carolina relievers Junior Montero and Brannon Jordan pitched the final three innings. Montero pitched around two walks in a scoreless sixth, and Jordan pitched around four walks and struck out two while working the seventh and eighth without allowing a run.

Will Dion (3-0) pitched through six scoreless innings, scattered four hits and struck out four while earning the victory for Lynchburg. He was later followed by relievers Reny Artiles and Tyler Thornton combined on the final three innings with Artiles giving up Chourio’s RBI triple and Perez’s home run. Thornton took over for Artiles in the ninth and finished the game while striking out two.

Chourio went 3-for-4 with a RBI triple while extending his current hitting streak to 11 consecutive games. Perez went 2-for-4 with a home run, his fifth of the season.

The Mudcats fell to just 1-4 in the series with Saturday’s loss. They also fell to a 1.5 games back of the Hillcats in the Carolina League North standings behind the Hillcats.
