San Jose, CA – A tribute for longtime California League Historian and Minor League Baseball ambassador, Chris Lampe, will be held by the San Jose Giants at Excite Ballpark on Sunday, August 27. The celebration will include a ceremony prior to the team’s 5 PM game against the Modesto Nuts as well as a mural unveiling. Members of the public who would like to insure that they experience the festivities should plan to be in the ballpark by 4:15 PM.
Lampe, who passed away in late June of this year, was a minority owner of the San Jose ballclub from 1987 through 2007. He was extremely involved during his tenure, including attending every game, hiring personnel and bringing in new ideas for ballpark operations. He served as the team's Chief Operating Officer from 2003-2007.
Lampe also had an encyclopedic memory and passion for baseball statistics. He put this knowledge and dedication into digging through newspaper archives to discover old box scores to compile records. Beginning in 2005, he became the California League Historian, updating the League Record Book that he wrote, edited, and published annually through the 2022 season.
Chris visited over 180 ball clubs across Major and Minor League Baseball, including the Sioux Falls Canaries in South Dakota where he also became a part owner. Minor League Baseball writer, Kevin Szerwinski, wrote an article saying he became "one of the leagues and games best ambassadors." As testament to his work, Chris was selected to throw out the first pitch for the 2016 California - Carolina League All-Star Game.
