CLEARWATER, Fla. - It was a battle of the bats on Wednesday night as DJ Stewart powered the Threshers over the Lakeland Flying Tigers in walk-off fashion.
For the first time in the young season, extra innings were played in BayCare Ballpark. Lakeland (1-1) broke the 8-8 tie in the 11th inning as Jimmy Kerr sent a line drive into right field that brought Ulrich Bojarski around the bases to score. Kingston Liniak added to the damage before the inning was over with a two-run home run that landed on top of Frenchy’s Tiki Bar to make it 11-8 going into the home half of the inning.
But Clearwater had the final say. Nicolas Torres started the inning on second base in accordance with the Low-A Southeast League extra-inning rule, and Edgar Made drew a four-pitch walk to put two men on base with no outs. Johan Rojas collected his third RBI of the night with a ground ball to left that scored Torres. Luis Garcia singled to load the bases and DJ Stewart launched a walk-off grand slam over the left field fence to win the battle 13-11.
Both teams combined for 24 runs on 24 hits. Four Clearwater (1-1) players had multiple-hit performances.
Mick Abel did not factor in the decision and gave up four runs on four hits while striking out two and allowing two walks in his professional debut.
The six-game homestand continues Thursday night at BayCare Ballpark. RHP Eduar Segovia gets the nod for the Threshers against Lakeland’s RHP Carlos Guzman. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. for the 7:00 p.m. game.
