Clinton, IA (July 15, 2018) - The Clinton LumberKings scored in bunches on Sunday afternoon at Ashford University Field to top the Lansing Lugnuts 6-2. The win is Clinton's (12-11, 51-42) third straight and their first series win in nearly two weeks.
The LumberKings lead early against Lansing (13-11, 56-38) with a two-run rally in the bottom of the first. Two walks and three singles made up the inning for Clinton with Ryan Costello and Keegan McGovern singling home runs to put Clinton out in front.
The Lugnuts then answered the LumberKings rally with a run in the top of the second inning against Clinton starter Ray Kerr.
In the top of the sixth inning, Lansing tied the game. Ryan Noda singled to open the inning and moved to third on a double by Brandon Grudzielanek. Kerr then allowed the game's tying run to score on an RBI ground out by Norberto Obeso.
The game remained tied through the sixth and into the seventh inning when the LumberKings broke out for two runs against Lugnuts reliever Andrew Deramo. The rally started for Clinton when Keegan McGovern reached on a strikeout and wild pitch and was followed by a Johnny Adams single to left. Rainis Silva then drove home his first two runs of the season with a double that landed on the chalk line behind the bag at third.
Deramo (2-2) stayed on to work the eighth and allowed the LumberKings third two-run rally of the game. Ariel Sandoval singled to leadoff the inning, Ryan Costello doubled high off the wall in left center, and Eugene Helder drove home the first run of the inning with a single to center. Jack Larsen capped the rally with an RBI ground out to second.
Kyle Wilcox benefited from the late LumberKings offense and earned his third win of the season. He held the Lugnuts scoreless over his 1.2 innings of work, surrendering just one hit, while walking one, and striking out three.
Sam Delaplane followed Wilcox (3-2) out of the bullpen and picked up his second save over the last three games and his team leading seventh of the season. After stranding the bases loaded in the eighth, he worked around a one out single by Chavez Young to preserve the LumberKings third straight win.
