Beloit, WI (July 6, 2018) - Keegan McGovern and Johnny Adams went back-to-back with home runs for the Clinton LumberKings in a 9-5 loss to the Beloit Snappers on Friday night at Harry Pohlman Field. Despite outhitting the Snappers (8-6, 40-43) 10-9 the LumberKings (9-6, 48-37) dropped their third straight to fall into third place in the Western Division.
LumberKings starter Oliver Jaskie was roughed up over his four plus innings of work. The Snappers scored in all but one of the five innings Jaskie (4-8) worked in. Beloit pushed and unearned run across in the first, added two runs in the second inning, a single run in the third, and then erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Jaskie took the loss for Clinton, allowing eight runs, five earned, on six hits while walking five and striking out two.
The Snappers batted around in their five-run bottom of the fifth to put the game out of reach. Hunter Hargorve went for 4-for-5 with a two RBI and a double and singled twice in the break out inning for Beloit.
The LumberKings offense came late in the game. They did not collect their first hit against Snappers starter Jean Ruiz until Jack Larsen doubled down the line in right to open the top of the fourth. Eugene Helder scored Larsen two batters later with an RBI single to center and would drive in two on the night.
Ruiz (2-6) did not allow another run over his five innings of work. He held Clinton to one run on three hits while walking one and striking out seven to pick up his second win of the season.
In the top of the seventh, the LumberKings got a little closer with back-to-back home runs from Keegan McGovern and Johnny Adams that opened the inning. It was the second time this season that Clinton had gone back-to-back with home runs, McGovern's going for his fourth of the year, and Adams his ninth of the season.
After adding a run in the top of the eighth, the LumberKings rallied in the top of the ninth to put the tying run into the on-deck circle but Snappers reliever Joshua Reagan struck out McGovern to end the game and hand Clinton their third straight loss.
The LumberKings will meet the Beloit Snappers for game two of their four-game set on Saturday night. Clinton will throw right-hander Randy Bell (1-0, 3.60) while the Snappers will counter with lefty Ivan Andueza (0-4, 4.12). First pitch for game one is slated for 7:00 PM. Fans looking to listen to the game can hear Erik Oas on the call on 100.3 FM WCCI and online at lumberkings.com via the tune in radio ap at 6:45 PM with the pregame show.
