BOWIE, MD – Minor League Baseball announced today that Bowie Baysox infielder COBY MAYO has been named the Eastern League Player of the Month for his performances with the team in June. Mayo averaged .340 at the plate, while maintaining an OPS of 1.178, hitting eight home runs, 19 extra-base hits, and driving in 18 runs. He led the league in home runs, OPS, extra-base hits, total bases, and walks over the sixth month.

Mayo, currently ranked as the #77 prospect in baseball, and #7 third base prospect by MLB Pipeline, opened the month with the back end of his team-leading 33-game on-base streak, reaching base safely in the first 17 games of the month. In 26 games over the month, Mayo only failed to reach base in two of them. His campaign for the award took flight in Bowie’s series against Richmond starting on June 13, when he hit 10-for-24 at the plate with three home runs to capture the league Player of the Week award. His argument was solidified the next week while Bowie visited Altoona, where he hit 12-for-26 with another three long balls, securing the Player of the Week award for the second-consecutive time. Mayo added three home runs in his third-consecutive series in the following week against Somerset, but the final two came in July.

With the promotion of Jordan Westburg to the Major Leagues, Mayo is currently the leader among active Orioles minor leaguers with 17 home runs this season. The 21-year-old was drafted in the fourth round of the 2020 draft out of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida.

The Bowie Baysox are the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, and play their home games at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie, Maryland.
