Mayo relishing power in return with Aberdeen

Coby Mayo has shown no signs of lag in his return from injury.

MLB’s No. 19 prospect put his 65-grade power on display this weekend while on rehab assignment at High-A Aberdeen. The right-handed-hitting corner infielder connected on three home runs in his past three games, with two of them coming in back-to-back innings Sunday in a 15-12 win at Ripken Stadium.

Mayo returned to action Thursday after missing nearly a month with a broken rib -- which he suffered while attempting to make a catch in foul territory last month at Triple-A. The 22-year-old went 1-for-2 in his first game back before going back-to-back with Orioles No. 5 prospect Enrique Bradfield Jr. on Friday and adding two more long balls in the fifth and sixth innings Sunday.

Across his first four games in his return from injury, Mayo is hitting 6-for-13 with three homer runs, three doubles, six RBIs and two walks to five strikeouts while starting two games at third base and two at designated hitter for the IronBirds. He put together his strongest performance in the series finale Sunday, going 2-for-5 with three runs, three RBIs, one walk and two strikeouts.

Before hitting the shelf May 17, Mayo was slashing .291/.359/.605 in 42 games for Triple-A Norfolk. The 2020 fourth-rounder clubbed 13 homers -- second most for the Tides this season -- and 11 doubles, while driving in 37 runs.
