Salisbury, MD - Aldrem Corredor had five hits while Luis Garcia had four, helping the Suns split a double header with the Delmarva Shorebird on Friday night by winning game one 4-2 and falling in the second game 11-4 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The Suns are 23-37 overall and will play the third game of the series on Saturday evening with a 6:35 PM first pitch.
Delmarva sent righty Matthias Dietz to the hill in game one of the double header to take on the Suns who entered the day winners of their last two. Hagerstown jumped out to an early lead against Dietz, scoring the first run of the ballgame in the opening frame. Cole Freeman walked and went to second when Garcia grounded out to second. Corredor singled to center, plating Freeman and giving the Suns a 1-0 advantage.
The Suns extended their lead in the fifth to chase Dietz from the game. Freeman walked and stole second and third with Garcia at the plate. Garcia lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Freeman to score and gave Hagerstown a 2-0 advantage.
The Shorebirds scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth against Suns starter Kyle Johnston, but Hagerstown took the lead back as the game went to extra innings. Nick Banks started the eighth inning as the designated runner and scored when Yasel Antuna reached on a fielder's choice to make it a 3-2 Suns lead. Antuna went to second on a throwing error and advanced to third when Jake Scudder flew out to right field. Jeyner Baez singled to left, driving in Antuna to put the Suns in front by a 4-2 score. Delmarva had no answer in the bottom of the inning, with the Suns taking game one of the twin bill.
Johnston went five innings while allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Phil Morse (1-0) tossed the final three innings in a win, allowing one hit with two strikeouts.
The Suns took an early lead in game two against Shorebirds starter Scott Burke. With one out, Antuna singled to center and went to third when Corredor singled to right to put runners at the corners. Banks hit a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Antuna and give Hagerstown a 1-0 lead.
Delmarva tied the game in the bottom of the inning but took the lead in the third against Suns starter Jackson Stoeckinger. Will Robertson hit a one-out homer to left to put Delmarva in front 2-1, while two other runs scored when Zach Jarrett doubled with a pair of runners on to give the Shorebirds a 4-1 lead. They added three more runs over the third and fourth innings, and by the time the fifth inning came Hagerstown was trailing 7-1.
The Suns cut into Delmarva's lead in the fifth with Burke still toeing the rubber. Omar Meregildo hit a one-out double to left and with two outs Garcia singled to left with Meregildo going to third. Antuna walked to load the bases and Corredor tripled to center, clearing the bases and bringing the Suns within three runs at 7-4.
It's the closest Hagerstown would get in game two, with Delmarva plating four more in the sixth and the Suns going down in order to end the game in the seventh.
Stoeckinger (2-5) took the loss after throwing three and one-third innings while allowing seven runs on seven hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Sam Held threw two and two-thirds innings in relief, allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Notes: Johnston's five innings of work ties a career high… It's the first time this season he's worked more than four innings in a game…Garcia has a five-game hit streak… He's also got 18 multi-hit games this season… Baez had his third multi-hit effort of the year… Corredor had two multi-hit games on Friday, bringing his total to 13… He had three RBIs in game two, which is his seventh game with multiple RBIs this season… It's his first three-RBI game… Freeman stole two bases, tying him for most in a game this season with Armond Upshaw who has done it twice, Banks, and Antuna… In game one, Hagerstown won their third straight to tie their season-high win streak… The Suns have split four double headers this season… Hagerstown is 3-2 this season when playing Delmarva in Salisbury… The Suns and Shorebirds continue their series on Saturday evening with a 6:35 PM first pitch… The Suns will send RHP Tomas Alastre (3-2, 5.18) to the mound to face Shorebirds LHP DL Hall (0-4, 4.28).
