According to Romero, Rivero himself confirmed the report with the reporter. Rivero is coming off a sensational season in the Pioneer League which saw him hit .349 (per the Boise Hawks website) with 20 home runs and 71 RBIs. In addition, Rivero collected 21 doubles and scored 57 runs in 59 games.
To say the Cuban infielder didn’t rake the Pioneer League would be an understatement, as his numbers in just 59 games are unheard of. Rivero is older (24) but that doesn’t mean he can’t be a useful prospect for the Cubs to add to their system. In fact, with those type of numbers, he’s a perfect addition to a prospect group that the Cubs are continuing to build.
There’s uncertainty behind Rivero’s primary defensive position, but the big draw is his bat. Rivero is a bit of an unknown entering the Cubs’ system. However, his numbers suggest he may be a diamond in the rough that the Cubs were able to find.
