As the Crow-Armstrong flies, third slam of year

In the Major Leagues, grand slams occur approximately once in every 1,500 at-bats. This season, there's been one every 0.08 percent of at-bats. But for Pete Crow-Armstrong, the feat has not been so elusive, despite the fact that he typically leads off.

MLB’s No. 12 prospect hit his third grand slam of the season, his first at Triple-A, in Iowa's 10-9 loss to Omaha on Tuesday night at Principal Park.

Crow-Armstrong came to the plate with the bases loaded and nobody out in the bottom of the ninth inning with his team down, 10-2. Hitless to that point in the game and homerless since Aug. 15, the top Cubs prospect sent the first pitch he saw from Royals lefty Christian Chamberlain to the opposite field.

It was Crow-Armstrong's fifth homer since being promoted to the highest level of the Minors on Aug. 1. It took the 2020 first-round pick a few games to find his rhythm, but he started to catch fire three days later, putting together a 15-game hitting streak. After the streak ended on Aug. 23, Crow-Armstrong struggled with five hitless performances over the next six games.

Perhaps 21-year-old outfielder just needed the right high-leverage situation to get on one final roll to end the season. With the bases loaded this year, Crow-Armstrong has gone 9-for-15 with the three grand slams. And he followed up his recent dry spell with at least one hit in the next six contests.
