CUBS RALLY LATE IN EXTRA INNINGS, SKY SOX TAKE SERIES
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Sky Sox dropped the final game of their five-game set against the Iowa Cubs Sunday afternoon in extra innings, losing the contest 6-2 after the Cubs rallied late to score six runs between the ninth and tenth innings.
The final game with Colorado Springs and Iowa got underway to a slow start in comparison to last night's 25-run marathon on an overcast afternoon in Southern Colorado. After three and a half scoreless innings, the Sky Sox jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Keon Broxton kicked off the frame with an infield single to third baseman Chesny Young. A long-shot throw to try and make the play on a speeding Broxton went wide, allowing him to get advance all the way to third base due to the error. After a groundout by Tyrone Taylor for the first out, another groundout by Christian Bethancourt would plate Broxton for the first run of the game. A batter later, Andrés Blanco soared his third home run over the right-field fence to give the Sky Sox a 2-0 lead.
After eight non-threatening innings, the Cubs bounced back in the ninth on reliever Erik Davis. Following a leadoff strikeout to mark the first out, both Jacob Hannemann and Young collected a pair of singles and then advanced to second and third on a wild pitch during the next at bat. Bjian Rademacher clutched up for the Cubs with the first extra-base hit for the Cubs in two days to clear the bases and tie the game at 2-2, sending the game to extras as the Sky Sox couldn't plate one in the bottom of the ninth.
In the top of the tenth, with Stephen Bruno on second base, representing the last out of the inning for the Cubs, Victor Caratini grounded to second baseman Nate Orf, who made a heads up play with a strike throw to third base for the lead runner putout. After Taylor Davis drew a walk and Hannemann hit a single to centerfield to load the bases, Young delivered a single to break the tie a plate one. Rademacher snuck another single over third base to plate two more while Mike Freeman's bunt plated a fourth and final run to make it a 6-2 Cubs lead.
In the bottom half, Colorado Springs went down in order, unable to add any additional runs.
Aaron Wilkerson started the contest, spanning four shutout innings while allowing just three hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Alec Asher relieved in the fifth inning, tossing another four innings of two-hit shutout ball with two strikeouts.
The Sky Sox hit the road for nine days and seven games with two California stops in Fresno and Sacramento. For all information on Sky Sox, follow along on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and visit the team's website at www.skysox.com.
__NOTES__
Tomorrow's Preview: In the first game of the three-game set against the Fresno Grizzlies on June 5 at Chukchansi Park, the Sky Sox are sending right-hander Freddy Peralta to the mound to face righty Josh James.
Long Ball Relief: After collecting three homers Wednesday against the Iowa Cubs, marking the most dingers in one game for the Sky Sox, Colorado Springs one-upped that stat with four total on Friday night in game three, which brought in six of the home team's 10 runs. On Saturday and Sunday, the Sky Sox tallied three more, bringing their total over the five games with Iowa to 10 home runs.
Extras: On Sunday afternoon, the Sky Sox played their fourth extra-innings contest of 2018. With the loss to the Cubs in the tenth, Colorado Springs is now 1-3 in extra-inning contests.
Seventh Series W: The Sky Sox won their seventh series of the 2018 season with a 3-2 series advantage. The series win marked the first since mid-May when they took three out of four games over Oklahoma City (game four postponed).
Held to Singles, Until Now: Sky Sox pitching did not allow an extra-base hit in 18 and two-thirds straight innings. It wasn't until the ninth inning on Sunday afternoon when Bijan Rademacher knocked a one-out game-tying double. Last night, the Cubs collected 15 total hits, which were all singles.
Davis' Streak Done: After 12.1 scoreless innings by reliever Erik Davis, his streak ended Sunday afternoon after allowing two runs in the ninth inning. Over his last eight outings, the righty allowed just six hits, two walks, and totaled 12 strikeouts.
Wren's Blast: Wren's 8th inning grand slam was his first home run of the season and marked his first professional career grand slam. In his sixth professional season, the Georgia Tech alum has totaled 11 home runs.
Slam Knowledge: The grand slam homer by Kyle Wren in the 8th inning marks only the fourth time a Sky Sox batter hit a grand slam home run against an Iowa pitcher and the first time in 14 years. The last time it happened was on April 25th, 2004 at Principal Park (Game 2) when Brad Hawpe hit a 4th inning grand slam off of Jon Leicester. The Sky Sox won 6-4.
Swiping Bags: The seven stolen bases Saturday night by the Sky Sox ties the team record for stolen bases in a game. There were two other times where the Sky Sox stole seven bases in a game: May 24th, 1999 at Principal Park against the Iowa Cubs (10-inning game), and on July 4th, 2017 at Security Service Field against the Nashville Sounds. The three stolen bases tonight by Dylan Moore was one short of the individual record for stolen bases in a game. The record is four stolen bases, all done at Security Service Field, by Jeff Huson on August 30th, 1996 against Albuquerque, Luis Sardiñas on May 1st, 2015 vs. Omaha, and by Kyle Wren on July 4th, 2017 against Nashville.
A Tale of Two Cities: Saturday marked the seventh time where the Sky Sox and Iowa Cubs played a game against each other, where both teams score 10 runs or more in the same game.  The other six: June 27th, 1998 at Security Service Field (Sky Sox 13, Iowa 12), July 3rd, 2003 at Security Service Field (Sky Sox 12, Iowa 10, August 12th, 2003 at Principal Park (Sky Sox 12, Iowa 11), May 12th, 2009 at Security Service Field (Sky Sox 16, Iowa 15 [F/10]), May 12th, 2011 (Game 2 of DH) at Security Service Field (Iowa 11, Sky Sox 10), August 3rd, 2015 at Security Service Field (Iowa 12, Sky Sox 10).
Phillips Triple: Brett Phillips collected his team-leading fifth triple of the season in the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday evening, marking his second three-bagger in as many nights.
Houle's First: Catcher Dustin Houle, who was transferred to Colorado Springs on May 26, knocked his first career Triple-A home run and first homer of the season. Houle played in 24 games for Double-A Biloxi prior to his promotion to the Sky Sox.
Wrapping Up Another Month: With the loss Thursday night, the Sky Sox finished the month of May with a 12-16 record. Colorado Springs had as many losses in May as they had wins in April, having gone 16-8 in the first month of the season.
Road Trip Scoring: Over the last road stretch for the Sky Sox in Tennessee, the Sky Sox plated nine of 67 runners in scoring position. The Colorado Springs squad has collected a total of 57 hits with four home runs and eight doubles.
This Week's Preview: The Sky Sox hit the road again for seven games to take on Pacific Conference teams, the Fresno Grizzlies, and Sacramento River Cats. This will be the first round of Pacific Coast conference games for the Sky Sox.
