WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (May 13, 2018) - The Dash offense plated seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead Winston-Salem to an 11-3, Mother's Day victory over the Down East Wood Ducks at BB&T Ballpark on Sunday afternoon.
The Dash (21-16) got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning as Alex Call drove a 2-0 pitch over the Nature's Select Knoll in left field for a solo home run that put Winston-Salem ahead 1-0. With the home run, Call continued his recent success at the plate, as he has now recorded at least one hit in 10 of his last 11 games played. He finished the contest 2-for-4 with a double and a home run for his third consecutive multi-hit game.
The Wood Ducks (20-17) briefly took the lead by plating three unearned runs in the top of the sixth. Eric Jenkins led off the inning with a single to center field, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and reached third on a passed ball. With Chuck Leblanc batting, a fielding error by Mitch Roman allowed Jenkins to score and tie the game at one. After back-to-back base hits and an error by Luis Basabe, Down East took a 3-1 lead.
The Dash stormed back in the bottom of the sixth. Call led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a groundout from Blake Rutherford, and later scored on a fielder's choice groundout from Gavin Sheets. Then, after Yermin Mercedes walked to put runners on first and second, Yeyson Yrizarri delivered a two-run double off the centerfield fence against Wood Ducks reliever James Jones (1-1) to put the Dash back in front 4-3.
Dash starter Bernardo Flores (3-2) provided a quality start for the fifth time this season. The southpaw went 6.2 innings, allowing three runs (none earned) while striking out two and walking two. The former seventh-round pick has eclipsed five innings in all seven of his starts this season.
After a scoreless top of the seventh from Blake Hickman, the Dash plated seven runs, the most runs Winston-Salem has scored in a single inning this season. The first two runs scored when Roman and Call came around on Rutherford's third triple of the season. Then, after walks from Micker Adolfo and Sheets loaded the bases with one out, Yrizarri was hit by a pitch to force in another run. With the bases still loaded, Ti'Quan Forbes drilled a bases-clearing triple into the right-center field gap to extend the Dash's lead to 10-3. Forbes put the finishing touch on the seven-run frame when he scored on a wild pitch.
Hickman kept the Wood Ducks off the scoreboard in the eighth, and Yelmison Peralta fired a scoreless ninth to finish the game. With the win, the Dash avoided a series sweep by winning the final game of the four-game series with the Wood Ducks.
