Brennen Davis is continuing to make up for lost time, and finding more success in doing so, at the Arizona Fall League. The Cubs' No. 2 prospect blasted his second homer and was on base three times on Saturday, raising his OPS through four games to 1.106. Another highly touted Cubs prospect, 10th-ranked Owen Caissie, doubled for Mesa. Rays infielder Ronny Simon added a grand slam, the first for any player in the Fall League this year. A pair of Mets outfield prospects, Stanley Consuegra (No. 23) and Brandon McIlwain, hit home runs for Peoria. Padres shortstop Jackson Merrill, MLB's No. 83 prospect, went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Luisangel Acuna's hitting ability and quickness were evident as he erased a 3-2 deficit by smoking a two-run double with an exit velocity of 106 mph off a curveball from right-hander Troy Watson (Blue Jays) in the top of the eighth inning. He later advanced to third base and aggressively raced home for another run when a wild pitch scooted a short distance away from catcher Cooper Hummel (D-backs). Salt River outfielder Jordan Walker (Cardinals), the AFL's top-rated prospect (No. 6 on MLB Pipeline's Top 100), tagged right-hander Quinn Priester (Pirates), the league's highest-rated pitching prospect (No. 44 on the Top 100), for a two-run homer in the fourth inning. Walker hammered a belt-high 85-mph slider for a 423-foot shot with an exit velocity of 103 mph. Tigers No. 24 prospect Joey Wentz delivered four perfect innings, fanning three while working with a 91-94 mph fastball, mixing in three effective secondary pitches (curveball, cutter, changeup) and throwing 28 of 37 pitches for strikes. Glendale 13, Scottsdale 11
While Rece Hinds’ first roundtripper of the Fall League staked the Desert Dogs to a 7-0 advantage at the time, it was ultimately a difference maker. The Reds’ No. 18 prospect also drew a walk in the fifth and promptly swiped second base. He came darting around to score just two bases later. Glendale starter Sam Benschoter – who teamed with Hinds at Dayton for three weeks – threw three scoreless frames and struck out two. Twins No. 12 prospect Austin Martin went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a pair of stolen bases for Glendale. For the home team, Red Sox prospect Stephen Scott fell a double shy of the cycle with four RBIs. More »
