Daytona's pitching shines in 2-0 shutout of Jupiter

JUPITER, Fla. - LHP Packy Naughton made sure his 23rd birthday was a memorable one. The West Roxbury, Mass. native yielded two hits over six shutout innings, as the Daytona Tortugas blanked the Jupiter Hammerheads, 2-0, on Tuesday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.

Naughton (6.0 IP, 2 H, 6 SO) was nearly untouchable throughout his performance. The southpaw retired the first nine batters he faced and did not surrender a walk. He issued just two singles in his outing - both to CF Victor Victor Mesa (2-4).
Despite his great outing, Naughton did not factor into the decision. It was not until the eighth inning where Daytona (5-8) finally broke up the scoreless ballgame.
3B Jonathan India (4-5, R, 2B) began the frame with a bang whipping a double down the left-field line. Two pitches later, DH Alejo Lopez (1-4, R, RBI) smacked a hit over the first baseman's head and into right. India raced home to score, giving the Tortugas a 1-0 lead. Following a ground-rule double to left by CF Stuart Fairchild (1-4, 2B, SO), RF Lorenzo Cedrola (1-2, 2B, RBI) ripped a line drive into right-center field. The shot carried deep enough to score Lopez from third on a sacrifice fly to expand the advantage to 2-0.
That was more than enough, as Daytona's bullpen finished out the rest of the performance. RHP Cory Thompson (2.0 IP, 3 SO) hurled two perfect innings of relief - retiring all six men he faced - and handed the ball to LHP Carlos Diaz (1.0 IP, H) in the ninth. Despite surrendering a two-out single to bring the tying run to the plate, the southpaw got 3B James Nelson (0-4, 2 SO) to sky out to center, ending the game.
Much like Naughton, Jupiter (6-6) LHP Trevor Rogers (7.0 IP, 8 H, 5 SO) hung zeroes on the scoreboard. The 21-year-old scattered eight hits in seven innings but took home a no-decision for the Hammerheads.
Thompson earned his third win of the season for the Tortugas in relief, while Diaz racked up his first save of 2019. RHP Alex Mateo (1.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER) was burned in that eighth inning and was saddled with his second defeat.
The Tortugas will search for their first series win of the season tomorrow night, as RHP Austin Orewiler (0-1, 0.00 ERA) is slated to make his second start of the season. Jupiter has not yet named their starting pitcher for the finale.

Following the week on the road, the Tortugas will return to The Jack to take on the Dunedin Blue Jays, High-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, on Monday, April 22. It will be the team's first Belly Buster Monday of the year presented by Marco's Pizza.
