Five-Run Ninth Inning the Difference in Cannon Ballers Victory
SALISBURY, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (19-38) fell short against the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (37-20) on Tuesday by a final of 6-2.
After a scoreless first three innings, Delmarva scored the game's first run in the fourth as a two-out single by Minor League rehabber, Reed Trimble, scored Jake Cunningham to make it 1-0 Delmarva.
Braxton Bragg delivered a solid start on the mound for the Shorebirds as he tossed four scoreless innings, striking out four to preserve a 1-0 lead for Delmarva entering the fifth.
The Cannon Ballers tied the game on a throwing error in the top half of the fifth, but Eris Rodriguez stranded a pair in scoring position to keep the game knotted at one.
Kannapolis starting pitcher, Jake Bockenstedt, matched the excellence of Braxton Bragg by tossing six innings of one-run baseball, allowing just three hits with six strikeouts.
With the game still tied at one in the ninth, the Cannon Ballers broke the game open as they took the lead with a two-run single by Albertson Asigen. A successful first-and-third steal and RBIs from Matt Hogan and Arxy Hernandez put Delmarva behind 6-1.
Delmarva plated a run in their half of the ninth on an RBI single by Aneudis Mordán to pull within four. But the game would end with the tying run in the on-deck circle, giving Kannapolis a 6-2 win in the series opener.
Billy Seidl (1-1) earned the win in relief for the Cannon Ballers with Harif Frias (0-3) taking the loss.
The Shorebirds will look to even the series on Wednesday as Daniel Lloyd starts his second minor league rehab appearance for Delmarva versus Jake Peppers for Kannapolis. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
