The Hillsboro Hops sent left hander Tyler Holton to the mound. Holton, a 2018 draft selection from Florida State University, dominated over four innings of work punching out five hitters and scattering two hits. His counterpart for the night, Juan Then, was equally impressive. Then punched three hitters over three innings scattering three hits.
Both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when Hops first baseman Andy Yerzy drove in Centerfielder Kristian Robinson on a single to right. Robinson put himself in scoring position after stealing his ninth bag of the year. Robinson has the same amount of steals as he does homers, he is showing the power and speed.
Hillsboro's Deyni Olivero followed Holton in the fifth inning and picked up directly where the Holton left off. Olivero punched out six hitters in his first four innings of scoreless work and kept hitters off balance all night
The Hops were in offensive business in the bottom of the eighth after a leadoff Steven Leyton hit by pitch. Layton advanced to third on a two base error on a pick-off attempt by Matt Martin. Robinson was intentionally walked to put runners on the corners with one out. A HUGE two-out single by Joe Gillette pushed a very important insurance run across the board to make it 2-0. The Hops were not done yet as a well-executed double steal scored Robinson when Gillette kicked the ball into shallow left field. Hillsboro held a three to nothing advantage going into the ninth inning.
Most of Everett's hits came from shortstop Patrick Frick, who went two for four with two singles. Cade Marlow added the other one for the Aquasox.
Olivero's final line included five innings of shutout baseball, allowing one hit, and punching seven Aquasox tickets.
The combined shutout by the Hops earns a reward for the pitchers, either batting practice or fungo golf. Does not matter, after that performance, they earned it.
Hillsboro moves to 4-3 in the second half, and take on the Aquasox again in their second of four games tomorrow night at 7:05pm. Full coverage begins on Rip City Radio 620 AM at 6:35 pm starting with the pregame show, followed by first pitch at 7:05pm.
FINAL: Hillsboro 3 Everett 0
