Despite a nine-strikeout effort from RHP Marcos Diplan (L, 0-2), the Biloxi Shuckers (11-10) fell 7-3 to the Chattanooga Lookouts (8-11) on Thursday night at AT&T Field.
Trent Grisham put the Shuckers on the board two batters into the game, launching a solo home run out of AT&T Field, his third of the season, off LHP Scott Moss (W, 1-1).
Chattanooga took the lead in the third inning thanks to a pair of home runs. Ibandel Isabel took RHP Marcos Diplan (L, 0-2) deep to center field for his fifth of the season to tie the game. Tyler Stephenson doubled off the right-field wall before Gavin LaValley homered to center field, his second of the year, giving the Lookouts the lead. Diplan would settle down after allowing the homer to LaValley, retiring the next nine batters in a row, including five consecutive strikeouts.
Biloxi scratched across a pair of runs in the fifth to tie the game. Michael O'Neill walked with one out and Grisham followed with a bunt single. Weston Wilson then smashed a ball to third that LaValley stopped but committed a throwing error to second, allowing O'Neill to score, cutting the deficit to one run. C.J. Hinojosa drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the tying run, but the Shuckers left the bases full after a pair of pop outs.
In the home half of the fifth, Alfredo Rodriguez reached on a fielding error and came in to score on a triple to center field by Luis Gonzalez, giving Chattanooga a 4-3 lead. T.J. Friedl added an insurance run with an RBI single to left and ultimately came around to score on a wild pitch. Diplan finished the fifth by striking out Taylor Trammell, his ninth strikeout of the night.
The Shuckers had a scoring chance in the eighth when Patrick Leonard singled and took second on a fielding error by Trammell. Aviles walked to put the first two men on base, but Max McDowell lined out to first and the Lookouts doubled up Leonard at second on a close play. RHP Joel Kuhnel (S, 2) induced a flyout from pinch hitter Blake Allemand to end the threat and retired the Shuckers in order in the ninth.
