The Sugar Land Space Cowboys (17-22) led from the first inning through the ninth but fell 4-3 to the Oklahoma City Dodgers (29-11) on Tuesday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
Bligh Madris led off the ballgame with a single and advanced to third on a failed pick-off throw, moving into scoring position for JJ Matijevic, who singled to right to make it 1-0 Space Cowboys in the first.
Rylan Bannon added to the lead with a solo home run to left in the second, his third of the year, moving Sugar Land ahead 2-0. On the mound, RHP Jairo Solis allowed a single to the first batter he faced but got a fielder’s choice and retired the next seven hitters in order as part of three shutout innings in his first appearance since April 18. The 23-year-old threw 36 pitches on the night, 22 of them for strikes.
Sugar Land added their final run of the night in the top of the fourth. Pedro León singled to begin the inning, stole second base and scored on a double from Joe Perez, extending the Space Cowboys lead to 3-0. RHP Angel Macuare took over for Solis in the fourth and gave up just one run in four innings of relief work.
RHP Joe Record (H,1) was called upon in the eighth, and after issuing back-to-back walks to start his night, got an out on a fielder’s choice before striking out Andy Pages and getting a fly out from Hunter Feduccia to strand the tying run at first. RHP Cesar Gomez (L, 2-1; BS,1) came into the contest in the bottom of the ninth inning and walked the first batter before Yonny Hernandez popped out in foul territory. Steven Duggar hit a game-tying home run and then a Luke Williams single brought in the winning run for Oklahoma City. The loss snaps the Space Cowboys season-best four game winning streak.
The Space Cowboys continue their six-game series in Oklahoma City on Wednesday evening. RHP Kyle McGowin (0-0, 0.00) is set to start for Sugar Land against Dodgers’ RHP Bobby Miller (0-1, 8.64) for a 7:05 pm first pitch at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
