Summary
Akron's Eric Haase belted a two-run double in the sixth inning, and three RubberDucks pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout, in a 2-0 win over the Altoona Curve Thursday afternoon at PNG Field in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
Turning Point
The RubberDucks (21-21) scored the only runs of the game in the top of the sixth when they rallied against starter Brandon Waddell (0-2) and the Curve bullpen. Tyler Krieger singled with one out, and Yu Chang was hit by a pitch. After Waddell retired Bobby Bradley for the second out, he was lifted in favor of right-hander Tate Scioneaux. Haase lifted a deep fly ball to center, sending Altoona's Elvis Escobar to the warning track. Escobar slipped and fell at the last second, but still made a lunging attempt at the ball. It settled in his glove for a split-second before popping out as Escobar hit the ground a second time. Both runners scored to give Akron a 2-0 lead.
Winging It
Thomas Pannone (1-1) earned his first Double-A victory by firing 6.1 innings of shutout baseball. He allowed just three hits and two walks, while striking out three. He left with one out and a man on in the seventh. Robbie Aviles entered the game and induced a double play from Chase Simpson to end the eighth, and then proceeded to toss a scoreless eighth. Sidearm specialist Neil Holland worked a perfect ninth to earn his third save and complete the whitewash.
Duck Tales
Jordan Smith collected three of Akron's five hits on the day. Smith was 3-4, with three singles. Yu Chang drew a pair of walks and was hit by a pitch. Mark mathias was 0-3, snapping his seven-game hit streak. Bradley made a sensational, diving stop on a line drive by Altoona's Jordan Luplow in the ninth inning.
