Dunning (6-8) struck out nine over seven dominant innings, and he retired the final 13 he faced. Salem's lone base runner came via an infield single from Nick Lovullo with two down in the third. The 3-4-5 hitters for the Red Sox (33-35, 73-64) went a combined 0-for-8 with six strikeouts.
Over his last two starts, Dunning has logged 19 strikeouts, pushing his season-long total to 168 between Winston-Salem and Low-A Kannapolis. As of the time of this release, Dunning owned a share of 11th place in all of Minor League Baseball in strikeouts. Former Dash right-hander
A part of the Adam Eaton trade with Washington last December, Dunning recorded his third complete game as a professional, with the most recent coming in his final start of the first half at Buies Creek. In that outing on June 17, Dunning also logged a seven-inning shutout in the opener of a doubleheader. Between the Dash and Intimidators, Dunning finishes the season with an 8-8 record and a 2.94 earned run average.
Thanks to Dunning's gem, the Dash (30-38, 54-84) snapped a five-game losing streak and eliminated Salem from playoff contention. The Frederick Keys officially clinched their first playoff berth since 2011 with the Dash's victory over the Red Sox.
Winston-Salem seized the lead for good in the fourth on a throwing error from Salem catcher Austin Rei. One inning later, the Dash added some insurance through a pair of recently-acquired players.
Red Sox starter Mike Shawaryn (5-5) spun a quality start, going six innings and giving up those two runs on just four hits. Matthew Gorst added a scoreless seventh inning out of the Salem bullpen.
