Dustin Pedroia to Join Drive on Major League Rehab Assignment

Greenville, SC - As the 2019 Greenville Drive season gets underway this week, a very familiar face will don the Drive uniform, as the Boston Red Sox are sending second baseman Dustin Pedroia, a World Series Champion and 2008 American League MVP, to Greenville for a Major League rehab assignment.
Pedroia is currently working his way back from a left knee injury. He is expected to play in multiple games in Greenville this weekend, including Opening Night presented by TD Bank on Thursday, April 4th.
"Having a player of Dustin Pedroia's stature join us in Greenville is a very exciting development, especially given the natural excitement of Opening Day at Fluor Field," said Drive General Manager Eric Jarinko. "He has played an integral role in Boston's remarkable run of success over his 13 seasons in the Major Leagues, which includes three World Series titles, as well as the 2007 Rookie of the Year, 2008 MVP, four Gold Gloves, and four All-Star Game appearance. We are excited to host him in Greenville as he prepares to rejoin the Red Sox in their quest for another World Series championship."

Pedroia is one of the most beloved figures in Red Sox history. He made his debut in Boston in 2006, just two years after being selected by Boston in the second round out of Arizona State. He was named the American League Rookie of the Year in 2007 after hitting .317 in 139 games, and he followed that up with the American League MVP Award in 2008. He hit .326 with 17 homers, 83 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 2008 while also taking home the Silver Slugger and the Gold Glove awards for AL second basemen.
In his 13 seasons in the major leagues, the 35-year old Pedroia has logged over 1,800 hits and boasts a career average of exactly .300, while earning four All-Star nods and four Gold Gloves. He has also played in two of the Red Sox three World Series championships since 2007, serving as the starting second baseman against the Colorado Rockies in 2007, as well as against the St. Louis Cardinals in 2013.

Pedroia joins a list of Red Sox major leaguers to play with the Drive on major league rehab assignments that includes pitchers Jon Lester (2007), John Smoltz (2009), Andrew Miller (2012), Rich Hill (2012), Chris Carpenter (2012), Franklin Morales (2013), Koji Uehara (2015) and Edwin Escobar (2015), shortstop Stephen Drew (2014) and outfielder Jason Repko (2012).
