Carlson, 23, finished 3rd in National League Rookie of the Year voting last season, batting .266 with 18 home runs, 31 doubles and 65 RBIs through 149 games in his first full big league season. He set the Cardinals single-season records for rookie switch-hitters in extra-base hits, total bases, doubles, RBIs and walks in 2021, while becoming the first rookie in MLB history to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game multiple times in one season (9/17/21 vs. San Diego and 9/30/21 vs. Milwaukee).
Carlson was hitting .247 with two home runs, nine doubles and 11 RBIs in 39 games this season before hitting the Injured List on 5/23/22. Prior to debuting with St. Louis on 8/15/20, Carlson became just the third Springfield Cardinal in team history to win the Texas League Player of the Year award in 2019, hitting .281 with 21 home runs, 24 doubles, 59 RBIs and six triples in 108 games that season. He was selected by St. Louis in the 1st round of the 2016 MLB Draft out of Elk Grove (CA) High School.
