Eight doubles key Generals' 9-5 win

JACKSON, TENN. - Back from a day off and a series sweep at Pensacola, the Jackson Generals kept their strong performance going, rapping out 11 hits in a 9-5 win over the Birmingham Barons (19-26).

The Jackson offense powered the team's sixth straight victory, setting a season-high mark with eight extra-base hits. The Generals (27-18) are now within a half-game of first place Chattanooga in the Southern League's North Division.
The Generals' four-run, first-inning surge against Birmingham left-hander Matt Tomshaw (0-2, 7.11 ERA) created a cushion that Jackson would maintain throughout the game. Jason Morozowski's two-out, three-run double put Jackson in front 4-1, as he and Domingo Leyba collected five of Jackson's eight doubles. Three of Jackson's first five offensive half-innings featured consecutive hits from the first two batters, as the Generals created a season-high 23 opportunities with runners in scoring position. The Generals have homered only once in their last five games, but they've scored 28 runs on 43 hits.
On the hill, Justin Donatella (2-2, 3.35 ERA) weathered some early hiccups to finish five innings with three runs allowed. He entrusted a four-run lead to the bullpen, and Joel Payamps, Gabe Speier, and Yoan López held up their end of the bargain, with Lopez striking out the side in the ninth inning. The Generals' staff has not allowed more than five runs in their last six games.
